A gouache illustration on paperboard for Man’s Life magazine by well-listed American artist and illustrator Lynn Bogue Hunt (1878 – 1960). This work features a western illustration of two bulls charging an armed man in a grassy field. As indicated by a handwritten inscription to the mid left, this work was intended for pages 24 and 25 of the August 1960 issue of Man’s Life. Unsigned, the work is not matted and remains unframed.
In his youth, Lynn Bogue Hunt spent time hunting, observing nature, and learning taxidermy before becoming one of the most prolific outdoor illustrators in the U.S. He illustrated dozens of books, created calendars, Duck stamps, advertisements, and painted 106 covers for Field & Stream throughout his lifetime. Grouse Feathers and More Grouse Feathers are among the best-known books that he illustrated. In addition to Field & Stream, his work appeared in numerous magazines including Sports Afield, Boy’s Life, Collier’s, and the Saturday Evening Post, among others.
