Paste and graphite on Fabriano fine laid paper
Signed in graphite to the lower right
A graphite and pastel mixed media drawing on on Fabriano fine laid paper by 20th century Romanian-Israeli artist Jean David (1908 – 1983), titled Flowers. The drawing depicts two Modernist flowers drawn against a textured, neutral background. The drawing is signed in graphite to the lower right. It is presented behind glass in a wooden frame with white finish and a string to the verso for hanging.
David was known as a prominent figure in the Romanian avant-garde movement and to the early-Modernist movement in Israel. David was a member of a Romanian Surrealist art group called ‘unu (one)’ before fleeing the country with a group of Romanian Jews in 1942. His boat was captured by British forces, and David began painting for the British Brigade before being drafted into the Israeli Navy during the country’s War of Independence. He eventually settled in Jerusalem and founded the art village Ein Hod. David went on to be awarded the 1960 Dizengoff Prize for Painting and Sculpture (Tel Aviv) and the 1954 gold and silver medals at the Triennial for Applied Art (Tokyo).
