A bronze sculpture titled Wisdom by Russian artist Romain “Erté” de Tirtoff (Russian/French; 1892-1990), dated 1988. This sculpture features an elegant woman with a bird perched on her right hand. It is signed in mold, numbered 214 of 375, and contains a Chalk & Vermilion and SevenArts foundry stamp present to the verso.

Roman De Tirtoff, known by the pseudonym Erté, is a Russian-born French designer who flourished in many fields including set design, fashion, and the graphic arts, spanning most of the 20th century. He began working for Harper’s Bazaar in 1915 creating over 240 covers for the magazine for over 22 years. His fashion illustrations appeared in numerous other publications. During 1976 Erté was awarded the title of Officer of Arts and Letters, and in 1982 the Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris by the French government. His work is housed in private and permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and London’s Victoria & Albert Museum to name a few.
