According to the purchase receipt, the portrait represents J. H. Ten Eyck, a descendant of Jacob Coenraedt Ten Eyck (1705-1793), a former mayor of Albany, New York.

- to fair; tarnishing and residue to paint; impact craquelure present throughout composition; canvas is slack and billowed; tarnishing, cracks, chipping, and scratches to frame; craquelure present to the verso of canvas; multiple canvas patches present to the verso.
