Untitled (Portrait), 1861
Oil painting on canvas
Signed and dated to the lower right

An oil painting on canvas by listed artist Edwin D. White (New York/Massachusetts; 1817 – 1877), dated 1861. This work depicts the portrait of an elderly woman dressed in a mid-19th-century attire, holding the Bible with her hands while she solemnly gazes at the viewer. This painting was realized with intricate photorealistic qualities associated with the introduction of portraiture photography which was strongly influenced by the American pioneer of photography Robert Cornelius (1809-1893). The work is signed and dated to the lower right. This composition is presented unframed.

Edwin D. White was born in Massachusetts, New England and is best known for his genre, historical, religious and portrait oeuvre portraying American subjects. He began his formal artistic training under the tutelage of the artist Philip Hewins in 1837. White further pursued his artistic career and moved to New York, refining his technique while continuing his education at the National Academy of Design, studying under the likes of John Rubens Smith (1775 – 1849). Subsequently, he went on to Paris to work next to French artist François-Édouard Picot (1786-1868), and later he moved to Düsseldorf to work with Karl Friedrich Lessing (1808 – 1880) in 1853 and in doing so established his distinctive, signature painting style and content for which he became recognized. His work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the National Academy, Brooklyn Art Association, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Historical Society and Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
