An oil painting on canvas by listed American painter and illustrator Howard L. Hastings (1887-1955). This work features an illustration of a fisherman in action, with his fishing pole, net, and bait. The work is signed ‘Howard L. Hastings’ to the lower right. It is presented in a beveled wood frame with a gold-tone liner. The artist’s contact information is handwritten to the stretcher bar verso.

Howard Hastings was born in New York City and studied at the Art Students League. He was a founding member of the Westfield Art Group and became known for his illustrations featured in children’s books and magazines such as Field & Stream, Amazing Mystery Funnies, and Boy’s Life, to name a few. Children’s book that he illustrated include General Douglas MacArthur, in Picture and Story published by Hampton Publishing Company, Watch, Shepherd Of The Range from Cupples & Leon Publishing Company, and Top Horse of Crescent Ranch also from Cupples & Leon, among others.

Condition

- canvas has slightly lost tension; stretch marks present at top; small spots of paint loss and rubbing along edges; small spots of accretion scattered throughout painting; some wear in frame includes stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
