Ndebele Jocolo Cermeonial Five-Panelled Apron

Item Details

none

A Ndebele Jocolo married woman’s apron from South Africa. This beaded goat leather apron features five panels of different lengths ending in a scalloped edge. The apron is densely beaded with geometric patterns in black, green, and white hues. It has leather ties, and there are no apparent maker’s marks. Jocolo aprons are worn as part of Ndebele traditional bridal attire, and are exchanged with Mapoto aprons when married women bear their first child. The apron is presented in a shadow box style frame.
