Two drawings on paper titled Latest Pixels and Sketchbook by Cincinnati-based artist Terry Cooper, both created in 2016. Latest Pixels is a colored pencil drawing on paper featuring illustrations of Avengers characters and handwritten inscriptions in graphite. The work is titled by hand to the upper left; it is also titled, dated, and inscribed to the verso. Sketchbook is a marker drawing on paper featuring illustrations of various comic book characters with handwritten inscriptions labeling the figures. The work is titled, dated, and inscribed to the verso. Labels from Visionaries + Voices providing information about the organization are adhered to the verso of each drawing. Neither drawing is mounted and both remain unframed.
Terry Cooper’s work is reminiscent of his personality – friendly, approachable, familiar and charmingly human. Typically using ink, colored pencil, and acrylic paint, the vast majority of his subjects are people, while occasionally depicting landscapes or still lifes. Superheroes or other comic characters are among his typical subjects, however he also takes time to draw those around him. Although his work may draw references from a magazine or periodical, Terry’s work is unmistakably his, as his drawings exhibit quick gestural lines and figures floating against a white ground. Cooper is often seen drawing with another artist, trading pictures, sharing illustration duties or simply sharing company.
