Two colored pencil drawings titled The Iceberg and Winter House by Cincinnati-based artist Andrew Hostick (20th/21st century). Created in 2016, The Iceberg features an illustration of a large iceberg on a yellow sea populated with various boats and portrayed with angular shapes. A handwritten inscription to the upper right of the drawing reads ‘David Maljkovic’. The work is signed ‘AJH’ and titled to the upper left. It is also titled, dated, and inscribed to the verso. Winter House is a drawing created in 2015, featuring an abstract portrayal of a farmhouse in a snow-covered winter landscape. The work is signed ‘AJH’ and specifically dated ‘11-5-15’ to the lower left. It is titled, dated, and inscribed to the verso. Two descriptive labels are adhered to the verso providing a short bio of the artist and information about Visionaries + Voices. Neither drawing is mounted and both remain unframed.

Andrew Hostick works from observation to paraphrase advertisements from various art magazines. Endorsements in Art in America and Artforum unfettered by content allow Hostick to focus on the image’s organization of objects and hue, allowing him to, via emulation, practice sophisticated use of composition and color theory. Choosing to work only with colored pencil on mat board, heavy-handed mark-making inscribes the surface and builds up a velvety sheen in his work. He works and reworks the entire surface (even white on white) with nonpareil intensity.
