A pair of untitled drawings by Cincinnati-based artist Jenny Crowe (20th/21st century), both created in 2016. These works feature one of Crowe’s trademark subjects, both exhibiting unspaced, crowded script endlessly running across the paper. One work is written in pen on illustration board, while the other is written in marker on both sides of a sheet of paper. The illustration board is titled, dated, and inscribed to the verso, while an inscribed label is attached to the paper. Neither work is mounted and both remain unframed.

Jennifer Crowe approaches her work with an intense focus. Whether pushing oil pastels across paper, slicing drawings into pieces for assemblage or using glue to piece together a collage she always handles each material with determination. She has loved to fill journals as long as she or anyone can remember. The fragments of text combine poetry and the mundane in a struggle to find a whole in her experiences. Crowe’s words are layered enough to visually flatten itself to become powerful and immovable forms. Her process is methodical, working from left to right and top to bottom filling the void of empty space until the viewer is trapped somewhere between the impulse to read and a pure visual experience. The fragmentation in her work comes from her philosophy that “fragments of life get pieced together like a puzzle.” Her new collage work communicates this viewpoint brilliantly, the shapes, pieces and colors cut apart and reconstructed to form pieces refined in their splintered beauty. Crowe currently lives in Cincinnati, Ohio where she has been making art at the Visionaries and Voices studio for years. She keeps journals of autobiographical writing, which slowly have become more entrenched in her art making process. Her work has recently been exhibited in the Underlying system is not known at Western Exhibitions in Chicago and the Outsider Art Fair in New York.
