There he established a studio and a career as an illustrator, his work appearing in the magazine for young people Youth’s Companion, as well as in many books. He continued to produce fine art oil paintings of Romantic landscapes and seascapes and during summers spent in Maine he would often paint watercolors of the local scenery. Copeland was a member of both the Boston Watercolor Society and the Boston Art Club, and his work was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and at the Boston Art Club from 1884 to 1909.
