An original 1903 antique landscape painting on canvas by very well-listed American artist Patrick Vincent Berry (New York; 1852 – 1922), titled Autumn in the Berkshires. The tonalist painting depicts a landscape painted in warm, glowing hues; it is reminiscent in many ways of the Hudson River School. The painting is signed to the lower right, and a plaque attached to the frame’s base also gives the artist’s name. It is presented in an antique gesso frame with cast embellishments and gilt finish. The painting is titled and dated ‘Oct. 1903’ to the verso of the canvas.
Berry was born in Troy, New York and studied art at Troy Academy, St. John’s College as well as Fordham University where he later became an instructor. He also studied with Hudson River School artists Albert Bierstadt (United States/Germany; 1830 – 1902) and William Hart (United States/United Kingdom; 1823 – 1894). Berry painted landscapes and pastoral scenes.
