Untitled, early 20th century
Oil painting on canvas
Signed to the lower left
An oil painting on canvas by well-listed Cincinnati artist Louis Charles Vogt (1864-1939). The image depicts an enclave of farm buildings nestled among large trees at the edge of a body of water. Large rocks and abandoned pier structures distinguish the shoreline. The work is rendered in expressive brushstrokes and vivid hues. The painting is signed to the lower left and is presented in a wooden frame with acanthus gesso moulding.
Vogt studied with Frank Duveneck and Charles Meurer at the Cincinnati Art Academy and in New York City with Henry Siddons Mowbray. His subject matter and style were also reminiscent of the Ashcan School, a group of New York painters who rejected the fantasies of American Impressionism in favor of a more realistic chronicle of 20th century life. During most of his career he maintained a studio in Cincinnati; however, he spent much of his life traveling about the U.S. as an illustrator for Harper’s and Century magazines.
