An early Rookwood Pottery vellum landscape plaque titled ‘The Inlet’ by Rookwood designer E. T. Hurley (American, 1869-1950). The plaque features an atmospheric landscape with a winding placid inlet lined with tall graceful trees to both sides and low hills to the distant horizon. The plaque is signed with the artist’s monogram to the lower right corner, also with title and artist name to a label to the verso. The plaque is displayed in a vintage gilded gesso frame with decorative gilded edge and includes wall mounting hardware to the verso.

E. T. Hurley studied at Xavier University, then at The Cincinnati Art Academy under the tutelage of Frank Duveneck. Hurley joined the famed Rookwood Pottery in 1896, his work received a gold medal at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis and his pottery and vellum plaques are avidly collected today. A prolific artist outside of his work at Rookwood, Hurley received praise for his printed work and was listed in the French index “The Dictionaire des Peintres, Sculptuers, Dessinateurs et Graveurs Benezit”. He was also a sculptor, working in bronze to create decorative pieces.
