Harper’s Weekly
An antique double-fold wood engraving on newspaper published by Harper’s Weekly, titled ‘American Home Scenes’, dated April 13, 1861 by Thomas Nast. The engraving depicts in meticulous detail genre scenes in rural America during the beginnings of the Civil War. Two of the vignettes, ‘Husking Corn’ and ‘The Breakdown’ show African-Americans, while four depict Caucasian gatherings, ‘The Applecut’, ‘The Dance’, ‘Quilting’ and ‘Raffling’. The vignettes are individually titled, while the paper’s title is to the top with date impressed to the verso. The engraving is displayed under glass in an off white mat and black and gilded wooden frame, wired to the verso for wall hanging.
