An oil painting on unstretched canvas titled Lady Sitting on Grass by listed artist Robert Whitmore (American; 1890-1979), dated early-mid 20th century. The work depicts the portrait of a resting young woman reclining on an ambiguous surface. The piece is unsigned and marked with artist’s estate stamp to the verso. Additionally to the verso, the unfished figural sketches of a female figure are included. This composition is presented unframed and mounted on foam board.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
