An oil painting on unstretched canvas titled Jack Logan by listed artist Robert Whitmore (American; 1890-1979), dated 1948. The piece depicts the bust-length portrait of a blond young man gazing directly at the viewer with an ambivalent expression. The work is inscribed with title and date to the verso. Additionally to the verso, the artist’s estate stamp is included. This composition is unsigned and mounted on foam board.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
