An oil painting on canvas mounted on board titled Red Head Female by listed artist Robert Whitmore (American; 1890-1979), dated early-mid 20th century. This work depicts the bust-length portrait of a woman with red hair portrayed from a three-quarter profile, comprised of subtle brushstrokes and tenous highlights. The composition is unsigned and marked with artist’s estate stamp to the verso. This piece is presented unframed.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
