A landscape oil on canvas titled Ploegen attributed to listed Dutch artist Pieter Josselin de Jong (1861-1906). The work depicts a farmer plowing a field with a horse-drawn plow. The impressionistic-style piece shows a wide expanse of flat fields under a gray sky with a low treeline to the distant horizon and several small shrubs punctuating the flattened patterns of the fields. The painting is rendered in expressive brushstrokes and natural shades with movement conveyed by the labor of the man and horse. The painting is initialed to the lower right corner, along with penciled title and signature to the stretcher’s verso. An original label from a Dutch framer is affixed to the back, along with conservator’s notations. The piece is displayed in an antique gesso on wood frame.
Pieter de Josselin de Jong, born in Sint-Oedenrode, trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, along with the Academy of Arts in Antwerp. He is known for both his genre and portrait paintings. His work is widely collected and in permanent museum collections.
