An antique hand-carved walnut chimera corbel, late 19th century. The corbel depicts a mythological, hybrid creature with finely-carved and detailed features, especially evident in the eyes, nose, mouth, and hair. It has a dragon-like neck and body with a scrolled-foliate front and a curled tail. The chimera sits atop a rectangular, plinth base with molded edges and there is an incised mark to the underside reading ‘VII’.

Condition

- some small chips/losses and shrinkage cracks; missing wings; some former worming.
