A gouache illustration on paperboard attributed to listed American western artist Edward Borein (1872 – 1945). This grisaille work features two levels of illustrations, with two Native American seated in the grass to the upper left and a Native American man fanning a fire throughout the lower half. The work is signed to the lower right. A handwritten inscription to the paperboard verso, concealed by the backing, reads ‘Languages of the World pg. 3’, perhaps indicating the publication for which the illustration was intended. The work is presented under glass with gray matting, and housed in a gold-tone and gesso wood frame with a dark gray liner.

Eduard Borein was born in San Leandro, California and is best known for his Western genre illustrations. He began his formal artistic training at the San Francisco Art School in 1841, studying under the likes of artists Jimmy Swinnerton and Maynard Dixon. Borein further pursued his artistic career working as an illustrator for the magazine The Land and Sunshine in California and later on, he successfully became an acclaimed illustrator for his work in the San Francisco Call. Subsequently, he went on to study at the Art Students League under the tutelage of renown artist Child Hassam, and in doing so established his distinctive Western illustrations and etchings for which he is recognized today. His oeuvre is part of various permanent collections including the Whitney Western Art Museum, Wyoming; Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Texas; San Diego Museum of Art, California; the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma and more.
