A ‘Wate and Fate Character Readings’ arcade scale. Produced by the American Manufacturing Company in the early 20th century, fortune scales like this one were extremely popular in small shops and cafes. Operated by entering a penny into the slot that corresponds with the birthday month, this scale offers “wate and fate”, and populates life advice on an interior wheel. This “fate” can be viewed through the glass top, which is also where the actual weight is displayed.
