Early Pietro Caproni & Brother Plaster Wall Plaque of Cupid and Psyche

A framed, early Pietro Caproni and Brother plaster wall plaque, circa late 1920s. It features a delicate raised relief image of Cupid and Psyche. It has red border rings, and is framed in hardwood, with a metal wire to the reverse. It bears the embedded brass tag for the maker, ‘Caproni & Bro./Plastic Arts/Boston’. Caproni (Italian, 1862-1928), a sculptor known mainly for large reproduction institutional installations, including a number of storied universities including Harvard, Yale, Emory, Cornell and Princeton. A number of prestigious museums also have Caproni reproductions in their collections. Lowe’s Theatres across the United States showed his works in the early 19th century, and his work was at one time represented in Boston’s Symphony Hall.

- for age. There are hairline cracks across the back, and a split at the front where the plaster meets the frame, but this does not travel up to the casting itself. Minor scuffing to wood frame.
