A watercolor painting on paper titled The Hoope Dance by listed American artist George Bertrand Mitchell (1874 – 1966), created in 1952. This colorful work features a group of Native American engaging in a ceremonial dance. The work is signed and specifically dated February of 1952 to the lower left. Presented under glass with canvas matting, it is housed in a gold-tone and black painted wood frame. To the verso are several descriptive labels, one of which is from Art Reference Gallery, Inc. and provides a short bio of the artist, and one of which is from Newman Galleries.

George Bertrand Mitchell studied at a number of institutions including the Lowell Institute in Massachusetts, the Artist Artisans in New York, the Cowles Art School in Boston, the Academie Julian, the Colarossi, and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. As Vice President of an advertising agency that represented the Canadian Pacific Railways and Steamship Lines, he traveled to the Pacific Northwest, where the Blackfeet Indians of Stoney Reserve became a primary in his art for years to come.
