An oil painting on board of a western landscape by listed German-American artist Karl Jens (1868 – 1945), created in 1939. This western landscape is populated with large rock formations, autumnal trees, and foliage. Signed and dated to the lower right, the work is presented in a carved wood frame with silver-tone and brown finish accents, a canvas liner, and a gold-tone sight edge.
Born in Germany, Karl Jens studied with artists Max Koch in Berlin, then with Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian. In 1901, he emigrated to the U.S. and created murals in New York City and Washington, D.C. In 1910, he settled in California and became known for his landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and genre scenes. His work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum, and the Springville Museum, among others.
