An oil painting on Masonite of a western genre scene by listed American artist Paul Herzel (1876 – 1956). This work features a cowboy on horseback, lassoing cattle in a mountainous landscape. Signed to the lower right, this work remains unframed. A label from Braswell Galleries is adhered to the upper right.

Paul Herzel was born in Germany and emigrated with his family to the U.S. at age seven. Having settled in St. Louis, he studied at the St. Louis Art School and began creating sketches, paintings, and sculptural models inspired by the animals he saw at the Forest Park Zoo. After traveling abroad, he moved to New York and studied sculpture at the Beaux Arts Institute of Design. In New York, his interest in animals and wildlife continued, as he created artwork inspired by his frequent visits to the Central Park Zoo. Many of Herzel’s sculptural designs have been sold and reproduced by companies such as Pompeiian Bronze; his original work has been collected by the New York Zoological Society and the Moscow Museum of Modern Western Arts, among other institutions.

- chips along edges of board; paint loss along board edges; scratch marks scattered throughout, especially to lower left; black and brown stains visible along edges of painting.
