A limited edition offset lithograph on paper titled The Signal by well-listed American artist Howard Terpning (1886 – 1953), printed in 1985. This work features a Native American man waving a buffalo robe on horseback as he trudges through a snow-covered winter landscape. The work is numbered 461 out of an edition of 1250 in graphite to the lower right; it is also signed by hand in graphite to the lower right above the artist’s in plate signature and date reading ‘1978’. Presented under glass and double-matted, this work is housed in a brown ridged wood frame. Included with the print is a brochure from The Greenwich Workshop Cameo Collection providing an artist bio, documentation, and information about the print.

Terpning was born in Illinois and studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the American Academy of Fine Art. He is especially known for his illustrations of western subjects, which have been featured in Time, Newsweek, Field & Stream, Ladies Home Journal, and Reader’s Digest. The artist also created work for motion picture studios; some of his notable works were made for Dr. Zhivago, The Sound of Music, Cleopatra, and Gone with the Wind. Terpning is a long-time member of the National Academy of Western Art and the Cowboy Artists of America.
