A 1942 edition of Isak Dinesen’s short story collection titled, Winter’s Tales, published by Random House, New York during World War II and is noted as being a ‘Random House Wartime Book’. The objective of ‘Wartime Books’ was after American civilians read the book, they were to forward it to Army Libraries to pass on to needy soldiers overseas. This effort was part of the Council on Books in Wartime (1942–1946) as a tool to promote the American spirit and way of life to both society and those who are serving in the military.
