A leather with marble boards 1817 edition of The History of Ceylon, From the Earliest Period to the Year MDCCCXV: With Characteristic Details of the Religion, Laws, & Manners of the People, and a Collection of Their Moral Maxims & Ancient Proverbs by Philalethes, A.M. Oxon ; to which is Subjoined Robert Knox’s Historical Relation of the Island, With an Account of his Captivity During a Period of Near Twenty years; Illustrated with a Head of the Author, with Figures, and With a Map of the Island_ . The book was published in London by J.F. Dove for J. Mawman. Both books are present in this volume and the account of Robert Knox has annotated text in the margins. The frontispiece, illustrations and map are present in the first book.
The authorship of this book has been attributed throughout history as being Robert Fellowes, 1771-1847, who actually never visited Ceylon. The information for his book came through a Lieutenant Richard Fisher Fellows, a relative to Robert, who served there from 1810 to 1827.

Condition

Some yellowing and foxing on the pages consistent with age. A pencil inscription appears on the title page denoting the author, “D .R. Fellows”. The leather corners are worn and the one of the marble endpapers in the front of the book is torn away from the binding.
