An etching on paper titled Cigarette Underground by listed American artist Irwin D. Hoffman (1901 – 1989), dated 1938. This work features a portrait of a laborer, likely a miner, lighting his cigarette with a candle. The work is signed by hand in graphite to the lower right and titled to the lower left. Presented under glass with off-white matting, it is housed in a silver-tone wood frame.

Born in Boston, Irwin D. Hoffman was a painter, sculpture, and printmaker. He studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School where he was awarded the Paige Traveling Scholarship, allowing him to study in Europe. After his return, he was based in New York; however, he traveled with his brothers’ mining company, visiting small villages in the Southwest U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico, which provided subjects for many of his works. His work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, among others.

- some residue and faint stains scattered throughout mat; wear in frame includes stains, scratches, and finish loss throughout.
