Parnall & Sons Balance Scale with Brass Pans and Weights, C. 19th Century
Item Details
An English Parnall & Sons balance scale with two brass pans and six assorted weights. The red painted cast iron base of the scale is marked ‘Class 2’, ‘Parnall & Sons’, ‘To Weigh’, ‘Bristol’, and ‘S11’. Two brass pans with rolled rims are also included. The scale and pans are presented with six brass weights including 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz and 4 oz weights marked ‘W. & T. Avery’; and an 8 oz and 1 lb weight marked ‘VR’ with crown for Victoria Regina.
Parnall & Sons was established in 1820, concentrating on the manufacture of scales until the 1880s, when it expanded into other shop keeping supplies, becoming the largest shop fitting company in England.
