A mid 20th-century watercolor painting on paper by listed American western artist Stanley M. Long (1892 – 1972). This high-action illustration features a cowboy riding a horse dramatically leaping in the air. The work is signed to the lower left. Presented under glass with beige matting, it is housed in a gesso and wood frame with a lemon gilt finish and low-relief mold patterns. A short bio of the artist and a frame label are adhered to the verso.
Stanley Long received his art training at the San Francisco Art Institute, the California College of Arts and Crafts, and the Académie Julian in Paris. He is best known for his watercolor paintings depicting American western subjects. Several of his illustrations were featured in publications such as Sunset Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. His work has been collected and exhibited by De Young Museum, Oakland Museum, and Shasta City Museum, among other institutions.
