An oil painting on canvas of a woman’s portrait by Robert Whitmore (American; 1890-1979), circa 1915. This painting depicts a young woman wearing a blue frilled neck dress rendered in wide, loose brushstrokes and muted tones. The artist’s signature is present to the verso of the canvas. This piece is presented in a thin wooden frame with a wire hanger to the verso.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
