An etching on paper board titled Breaking Waves by listed artist Robert Whitmore (Ohio; 1890-1979), dated circa 1920s. The piece depicts an intricate coastal scene comprised of tumultuous waves crashing against a rocky shore. The work is unsigned and marked with the artist’s estate stamp to the verso. The composition is presented mounted on foam board matting.
Robert H. Whitmore was a painter, printmaker and draughtsman born in Dayton, Ohio on February 22, 1890. Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cincinnati Art Academy, deriving his impressionistic style from the artistic movement of the time. Whitmore preferred to work directly from nature, believing that it produced an honest interpretation of the world around us. In the 1920s, Whitmore began teaching at the Dayton Art Institute before settling into a position at Antioch College for thirty years.
