A pastel drawing on paper titled Pensive Mood by listed artist Robert Whitmore (American; 1890-1979), dated early-mid 20th century. This work depicts the portrait of a brunette woman portrayed from a three-quarter profile with gestural applications and subtle highlights. The piece is unsigned and marked with artist’s estate stamp to the verso. An inscription reading ‘Fixed, 9/22/92’ is inscribed to the lower right. The composition is mounted on foam board and presented unframed.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.

- irregularities, minor wear and small pinhole perforations throughout the edges of the paper; negligible creases, minor stains, even toning and slight foxing throughout the paper.
