An oil painting on canvas titled Green Hills by well-listed Ohio-based artist Robert Whitmore (1890-1979), dated circa 1919. This work features a vibrant landscape composed of a sweeping verdant hill surrounded by lush greenery. The composition is comprised of energetic brushwork, subtle areas of impasto and an overall sense of motion. The piece is unsigned, although the artist’s name and date are inscribed to the verso. Additionally, an artist estate stamp is included to the canvas verso. The work is presented in a wooden frame with a black fillet.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
