A circa 1951 ‘Gala’ rattan armchair by Italian designer Franco Albini (1905-1977) and produced by Vittorio Bonacina. The sculptural rattan chair has a high back and rolling arms with a deep seat that cradles the sitter in just the right degree of recline.
Franco Albini was born in Milan, Italy and studied architecture at the famous Politecnico, apprenticing under master architect-designer Gio Ponti. He worked with several mid-century manufacturers and prior to WWII, he was instrumental in forming the Rationalist movement which strived to create furniture and architecture that paid heed to both form and function using affordable materials. His designs received many awards and are still produced today.
Albini worked with various mid-century manufacturers during his lifetime, including Cassina, Arflex, Poggi, Arteluce, Brionvega, and Knoll, and many of his designs are still in production. He received multiple awards for his work, including three prestigious Compasso d’Oro Awards.
