An oil painting on canvas by listed American artist Paul Herzel (1876 – 1956), created in 1919. This work features a portrait of a robust buck in an autumnal forest. Signed and dated to the lower right, the work remains unframed. The canvas is painted to the verso featuring another autumnal forest scene.

Paul Herzel was born in Germany and emigrated with his family to the U.S. at age seven. Having settled in St. Louis, he studied at the St. Louis Art School and began creating sketches, paintings, and sculptural models inspired by the animals he saw at the Forest Park Zoo. After traveling abroad, he moved to New York and studied sculpture at the Beaux Arts Institute of Design. In New York, his interest in animals and wildlife continued, as he created artwork inspired by his frequent visits to the Central Park Zoo. Many of Herzel’s sculptural designs have been sold and reproduced by companies such as Pompeiian Bronze; his original work has been collected by the New York Zoological Society and the Moscow Museum of Modern Western Arts, among other institutions.
