A 1984 mixed media collage on paper of figures by contemporary New York artist Bill Schiffer. This work is composed of cut pieces of colored ground, which have been drawn with white charcoal ahead of time. It depicts a silhouetted figure that has been split at the torso as undulating waves of shapes spill before blue, sloped forms. To the lower right corner is a graphite signature. The work is mounted to a white backing and is encased by a protective glazing with hanging wire to the verso.
Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980’s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
