Paul Chidlaw Monochromatic Monotype of a Landscape

Item Details

Unsigned

An original monotype on heavyweight paper with deckled edges by well-listed American Abstract Expressionist Paul Chidlaw (Cincinnati, 1900 – 1989). The print depicts a monochromatic view of a landscape. A curving river or road sits at the base of a hill covered in trees and buildings, all depicted in loose strokes of ink. The print is unsigned, but stamps from Chidlaw’s wife and his estate are printed to the piece’s verso. The piece is presented without matting or framing, awaiting your choice of presentation.

Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
