An original oil painting on canvas board by well-listed artist Anton Otto Fischer (New York/Germany, 1882 – 1962). This painting depicts a clipper ship at sea, under a sky filled with billowing clouds. This work is signed to the lower left. It is housed in a gold tone wood frame and is ready to hang with a wire.

Anton Otto Fischer was born in Germany, leaving at the age of 15 to avoid the priesthood. He paid for his travel to America by working as a deckhand, and continued to work on ships for several years. He eventually made his way back to Paris to study with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian, returning to the United States in 1908 and finally establishing a studio in Wilmington, Delaware. He worked as a freelance illustrator, completing thousands of works, including many for clients that included Harper’s Weekly, Jack London and The Saturday Evening Post.

Condition

- extensive accretion and small areas of craquelure to painting surface. Abrasions, wear and accretion to frame. Piece is loose in frame and paper backing is torn.
