An original oil painting on canvas by well-listed artist Xavier Barile (Italy/New York, 1891 – 1981). This painting depicts an older, bearded man with a smirking expression. He is wearing a well-worn hat and is holding a drink. This work is signed to the lower right. The stretched canvas is presented without framing.

Xavier Barile was born in Italy, and immigrated to New York in 1907. After learning English he studied at Evening Art Classes at Cooper Union Institute in New York and eventually enrolled in the Art Students League, New York City where he studied under John Sloan, Reginald Marsh and Victor Perard. He was part of the informal Ashcan School, a group that painted scenes from daily life in New York’s poorer neighborhoods. He exhibited across the United States, at venues including the Whitney Studio Club, The Kit Kat Club, The Cincinnati Museum, The New Mexico Museum and his work is held in The National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA) Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

- stretcher marks. Scratch with dent to lower left. Extensive accretion across painting surface. Abrasions to surface to edges and to lower right.
