Born in the Netherlands, Henry Cornelius Balink studied at Amsterdam’s Royal Academy of Art with Derkinderen, Dake, Van der Waay and Six. He and his wife immigrated to the U.S. living shortly in New York and Chicago, where he painted murals at the Lady of Sorrows Basilica. In 1917, he settled in New Mexico and started to paint scenes featuring Native Americans and Pueblo villages. The artist spent time traveling throughout the American west, painting at the Hopi reservation, the Sioux reservations in the Dakotas, and Native American subjects in Arizona and Montana. His work of the American west became a huge success and he advised President Eisenhower on his early painting efforts. Balink’s work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, the Tucson Museum of Art, the Thomas F. Gilcrease Museum and the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, among others. After his death, he was commemorated with a bronze plaque displayed in front of the Museum of Fine Arts.
