A 2009 offset print on Speckletone paper titled Freedom to Lead by highly influential street artist Shepard Fairey (American, b. 1970). The print depicts an expressive black, gold, red, and white portrait of Burmese politician and author Aung San Suu Kyi. To the upper edge of the print is the inscription ‘Freedom to Lead’, with the inscriptions ‘Support Human Rights’ and ‘Democracy in Burma’ to the lower left and right corners of the print respectively. It features a dedication in red ink to the left edge of the print, and is presented behind acrylic in a wooden frame.
Shepard Fairey is one of the most influential and prolific street artists of the 21st century. Fairey is also known for his graphic designs, activism, illustration, and as the founder of OBEY Clothing. Emerging from the skateboarding scene, he first became known for his ‘Andre the Giant Has a Posse’ campaign. This campaign was started while the artist attended the Rhode Island School of Design. Today, his work can be found in site-specific installations and at the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, and more.
