Clarence Holbrook Carter is best known for his modernist genre and landscapes oil paintings and watercolors. He began his formal artistic training in his hometown at the Cleveland School of Art in 1923 under the tutelage of William Millikin. Upon graduating, Cwarter further pursued his artistic career and moved to Italy, refining her technique while continuing his education under the likes of Hans Hofmann. During his life, Carter was an active instructor teaching in several institutions including Cleveland Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, Lehigh University, Ohio University, Atlanta Art institute and the University of Iowa. Additionally, he became a member of the American Watercolor Society and subsequently, Vice President of this organization in 1962. His work has been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Fogg Art Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, National Museum of American Art and the Chicago Art Institute among many others.
