Large Maitland-Smith Coromandel Jardinière
Item Details
A large coromandel style jardinière by Maitland-Smith. This tapered vase features a cinched neck, rounded shoulders, with a greek key motif and floral and urn design, in tones of brown and gold. The Chinese coromandel technique features a textural surface with layers of clay applied to wood, and several layers of lacquer. Intricate patterns are then carved out, painted or applied with gold leaf, resulting in a slightly raised all over finish due to the lacquer. The base is marked ‘Mailtand-Smith, Hand made in China.’ Please see 18CIN427-002 for a companion item.
