Doña Rosa Candlestick Holder, Mayan Inspired Pipe, and Mexican Pottery Vessels

Item Details

A collection of Mexican and Mexican inspired pottery pieces. This group offers a black clay or barro negro reticulated vessel with incised and pierced floral motifs throughout. It has a rounded underside, and a round rolled lip opening, as well as a braided wooden stand. It is unmarked. A coiled ceramic vase is also included with a black and ivory colored finish featuring hand-painted lizard motifs, and it is unmarked. There is also a archaistic bisque clay pipe with a figurative bowl and faint red coloring. Also included is a Doña Rosa barro negro candlestick holder with a Mid Century Modern design, incised to the underside ‘Doña Rosa Coyotepec Oaxaca Mexico’.

Doña Rosa is known for her modern development of the use of black clay, “barro negro,” in Mexican pottery, and using a burnishing technique to compress the clay platelets so that the ware is exceptionally strong, glossy and has a rich, deep onyx black color. Her work is collected and prized among aficionados of the Mexican pottery tradition, and her family still operates her workshop in its original location.
