Inscription and ink drawing to the verso
An acrylic painting on paper of an abstract portrait by well-listed contemporary German Neo-Expressionist Peter Robert Keil (Berlin; born 1942), titled The Sailor, Pablo Picasso, dated 1975. This work features the abstract portrait of Cubist artist Pablo Picasso portrayed in Keil’s signature style exhibiting loose black outlines and vibrant bursts of blue, yellow, red and green applied in large gestural brushstrokes. The work is signed and dated to the lower right. To the verso, artist’s signature, title and ink drawing are present.
Influenced by German Expressionism and graffiti elements, Keil is known for his simplified abstractions of traditional art subjects. He studied under Otto Nagel at a young age and developed relationships with other renowned artists such as Joan Miro. As Keil abandoned realism and developed his signature style, he used more vibrant colors rapidly applied with large gestural brushstrokes resembling the abstract style of Picasso.
