An Original 20th Century Watercolor Interior by Scenic Artist Elmer Swart

Item Details

An original 20th century watercolor painting of an alhambresque interior by scenic artist Elmer Ellsworth Swart (American, 1864-1945). This stunning interior illustration depicts a large elaborate room with eight pink marble columns at the outer circumference, arches, lush potted plants, an urn and benches in the center of the room and intricate turquoise tiles at walls. The reflection of the room’s elements in the flooring suggests a marble floor and the composition draws the attention of the viewers eye through an open stairwell to the sunny landing beyond. Stamped in lower right corner in red Elmer E Swart. Elmer Swart began designing theatrical scenery in the late 1880s and was a member of the United Scenic Artists Local 829 which was a labor union of designers and artists in the entertainment industry, founded in 1897. The painting is under glass with a deep blue mat and a simple thin gold-colored frame.
