Item Details
A circa 1950s Alphonse La Paglia (Italy, 1907 – 1953) designed modernist coffee service in sterling silver by International Silver, comprising a coffee pot with ebonized wood handle, covered sugar bowl, creamer and tray with extravagant handles. The individual pieces all having blossom handles and finials with beaded curly detailing and pierced work at the base. All are appropriately hallmarked and the total approximate weight inclusive of the ebonized handle is 94.791 ozt.
Alphonse La Paglia was born in Sicily in 1907 and studied silversmithing under Georg Jensen in Denmark before immigrating to the United States in 1940. In 1952 he established a working relationship with International Silver (Meriden, Conn.) where he formed the International Silver Craft Association to create modernist Danish inspired hollowware with only a handful of assistants. Alphonse died soon after in 1953 yet his designs were produced under the watchful eye of Kurt Christoffersen until 1957.
